Medical treatment in South India from Oman

Oman has one of the longest-standing medical travel relationships with South India of anywhere in the Gulf. Muscat to Kochi is a short hop — a little over three hours — and several major Kerala hospitals have run dedicated Omani patient desks for years, with Arabic-speaking coordinators and staff who understand what an Omani referral letter looks like. For patients from Oman, this is a well-worn path rather than an experiment.

That familiarity cuts both ways. It means the logistics are straightforward. It also means there is a lot of informal advice circulating, some of it out of date. What follows is the practical picture as it stands, with the parts that change flagged as such.

The Indian medical visa, from Oman

India issues an e-Medical Visa for treatment and an e-Medical Attendant Visa for family travelling with the patient. Both are applied for online in advance; the electronic route does not require a consulate visit.

Eligibility follows your passport nationality, not your residence in Oman. This trips up expatriate residents regularly. An Indian citizen living in Muscat needs no visa. An Omani national applies as an Omani national. An expatriate from a country outside India's e-visa scheme applies for a regular paper medical visa at the Indian Embassy instead. We establish which applies to you at the start, because it changes how much lead time you need.

You will generally need a passport valid at least six months beyond arrival with two blank pages, a recent photograph, a scan of the biodata page, and a letter from the treating hospital in India confirming your appointment. We obtain that letter for you — it cannot be issued without a reviewed case, which is why the medical review comes before the paperwork rather than after it.

The visa is normally issued for multiple entries with the permitted stay counted from first arrival, which suits treatment that runs over several weeks. Processing is typically a few working days.

Getting there

Muscat to Kochi is typically around three and a quarter hours, which is short enough that many patients travel without an overnight stop and short enough to be tolerable for someone who is unwell. Trivandrum and Kozhikode are also served, and Salalah connects through Muscat. If your treatment is in Tamil Nadu or Karnataka, Chennai and Bengaluru are the arrival points.

We do not sell flights. We tell you which airport and roughly when, so you can book sensibly, and we handle the pickup and transfer at the other end.

What a trip actually looks like

You send reports and scans. A specialist reviews them and gives an opinion. We put it in writing: the hospital, the consultant and their medical council registration number, the procedure, an honest cost range and the number of days to allow. Nothing is booked and you owe nothing at this point.

If you proceed, we obtain the hospital letter, you apply for the visa, and dates are confirmed. You will usually arrive two or three days ahead for pre-operative assessment. Occasionally that assessment changes the plan — a surgeon who revises their view after examining you in person is being careful, not unreliable, and we would rather set that expectation now.

After discharge there is a review period before you are cleared to fly. People consistently underestimate this window, which is why our procedure pages quote a range of days rather than a single figure.

Paying for treatment

You pay the hospital directly in Indian rupees at the hospital's own rates. We never take your money and never add a margin to a hospital's price. Our fee comes from the partner hospital for the referral, which is why our help is free to you and why it does not affect what you are quoted.

Hospitals generally accept international cards and bank transfers. Card limits set by Omani banks are a common snag — worth raising the limit or arranging a transfer before you travel rather than discovering the problem at the billing desk. If you have international health cover, tell us early; it can change what makes sense.

Bringing someone with you

The e-Medical Attendant Visa allows close family to travel with the patient, normally up to two people, applied for at the same time and linked to the patient's application. We include attendants by default unless you say otherwise.

Accommodation near the main hospitals runs from hospital guest-houses to serviced apartments minutes away. For a stay of more than a week or two with family, the apartment is usually the better answer, and we arrange it.

Language and day-to-day support

Arabic-speaking coordination is well established at the larger Kerala hospitals, which is a genuine difference from many other Indian destinations. If you would prefer consultations conducted with an interpreter present, tell us in advance and we arrange it rather than leaving it to chance on the day. Practical matters — halal food, prayer facilities, a family member staying overnight on the ward — are routine requests at these hospitals, not special ones.

After you go home

You leave with a discharge summary, imaging, prescriptions and a follow-up schedule, and we remain reachable afterwards. Where review can be done remotely we arrange it with the same consultant rather than whoever happens to be free. If something is better handled in Oman, we help you brief a local doctor with the operative notes rather than a summary — continuity is the part of medical travel most often dropped, and the cheapest to get right.
